Ok, I've never listened to Ryan Adams before (except the SK6ERS covers). With that said: Where is a good starting place for a newbie fan? Any good live (torrent or archive) shows you fans can suggest?

Dallas, October 19, 2007. They played for 3 hours, and did songs that Ryan rarely does live anymore ("Come Pick Me Up," "Wonderwall," etc.). Montreal and Toronto (Sept. 19 & 21) were good shows, too, but Dallas is probably your best bet if you've never listened to him before. There's a great mix of new and old stuff...definitely worth the ridiculous amount of time it will take to download it :) I downloaded it from Archive, but there's probably a torrent floating around somewhere...try here. Enjoy!

    For Your Musical Enjoyment!

and a little bonus in the form of one of my FAV RA bootlegs, The Suicide Handbook

Also, Ang, although his live shows are the cats pajamas, I've found that when people get started with RA, they tend to like some of his album stuff better. In the live shows, especially here as of late, they get really really into the jams. If you like the Grateful Dead, then I'd say go for the live shows. If not so much, I'd try some of his albums or some earlier concerts first. Most all of his albums are killer -- Gold, Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, Heartbreaker and Easy Tiger are all great to start with. Some great early shows are 10-28-99:

    and 10-2-00:

That should keep your ears busy for a while :)

So I don't know how much you guys care to see of this guy, but he has his own youtube account and has put up some funny stuff as well as some really, really beautiful new songs. In "Satanic Witches Arise" (haha...oh, ryan) you even get some provocative dancing! lol. "Saturday Night Bedroom Show", "Blues for JR" and "Broken Arrow" are all sooo beautiful.

    Enjoy!

I'm seeing him next week.. I'm very excited!! It's been a while..... following the trend of the post... i do love "Halloweenhead" but my favorite song off Easy Tiger is definitely "Goodnight Rose." LOVE the chorus on that one!

you're in for a treat with the live version of G'nite Rose...Neal Casal's harmonies are a treat for the ears. when they hit "plateau" its pretty glorious. i've seen him twice, and i can't wait for the Cards to come back around my way. have fun, and if you meet them, they're super nice guys, ryan too, even if people may lead you to believe otherwise. [And he IS sober now (that's for Kit :) ]

since i never really posted this earlier, i'm gonna go with either The Sun Also Sets or Pearls on a String (which is wonderful when jammed out live, for realsies).

    have fun, i'm jealous!

um yeah, so that was an incredible show. his voice just blows me away every time... Goodnight Rose was fab, they did an a capella version of Pearls on a String, & a great version of Oh My Sweet Carolina. & I did get to meet them... the Cards were hilarious & so much fun, & Ryan is definitely sober (except for some red bulls, haha) & really sweet. Good times!

CARDINOLOGY out on Tuesday the 28th, who's excited?!?!? The album sounds just great. Ryan's vocals are killer on the whole thing, and are soo heartbreaking on 'Stop' and 'Evergreen', kind of like his voice on 'Words' if you've ever heard that one. 'Magick' is a super-fun rockin jam complete with zombies and mushroom clouds. I really love hearing all of the Cardinals vocals. It's definitely a Cardinals album, not a Ryan Adams album. Go Cards!

Everyone, Go buy it! You won't regret it.

I love this CD... can't stop listening to it. Then again, I usually can't stop listening to anything Ryan Adams is involved with. "Magick" totally blew me away - it's such a rock out song! & so many of the songs are just heartbreaking.... ugh he's so effing talented, ha ha.

tornado - are you on the RAA message board too? you sound like you could be that kind of RA fan. If so, nice to meet you, willowjane here :)

Haha no, I'm not in the RAA boards (though I do poke my head in from time to time). If I participated in any more message boards in life, I would never get anything done.... I barely have time for this one sometimes. But I like posting in here because there aren't 10 million people & it's easy to chat & keep up with everyone. If I do ever join the RAA boards, I'll keep my eye out for you :)

sooo... Sixers/Cardinals fans take on Ryan's alleged "hiatus" from the music industry following the Atlanta show in March? I think he's being overly dramatic, as only Ryan can be  Or maybe I'm just hoping, since he hasn't been to the PNW in ages & I want to see him before this temporary retirement occurs....

i personally blame mandy moore for the hiatus :) but seriously, i wonder how long this break will last. the music is trapped in his blood, i doubt he can stay away very long. maybe out of the spotlight, but he can't get rid of the music. it'd be a crime to hide that talent!

I absolutely love his music. Truly. But that man is SUCH a diva. It drives me crazy.

Its sad he's "taking a break" or "hiatus." Really sad. I hope it doesn't stick for long.

word from the inside is that he's taking a break for health & other personal reasons. he's got an inner ear disease (Ménière's disease) that is effecting his hearing and balance. He's mostly deaf in one ear and is losing hearing in the other. this is also why he's been accused of being "drunk" on stage recently (he's been sober for almost 3 years).

Also, he is now engaged (!!!!) to Mandy Moore. I can imagine that it would be less than desireable to be in the studio/on tour during this time.

I can only hope that with time the Cardinals will return. I have no doubts that Ryan will continue to do what he loves (music and writing) and that we will see the fruits of that in the future, but for now I'm content to let him have some time to get better and have a little happiness. I'm confident that this "hiatus" is in his best interest and therefore in ours...It's not like he was throwing a tantrum and decided to quit music. This seems to be something that he's thought about and made a mature decision.

    XOXO, Kim

I don't see him completely quitting music because he is just way too full of genius & creativity.... but he does have a tendency to say things & then go back on them... & he can be a bit of a diva. The brilliant ones always are!! And anyway, that's why we all love him, right?

The Mandy Moore thing is just strange to me. But if it makes him happy.... I hope he gets over his allergy to cameras

Yeah, I just don't see him quitting for good. Musicians like that can't do it, even if they think they want to. He's too amazing. A hiatus is fine, esp if it's for his health but hopefully he'll come back soon! I'm seeing him twice in March though, so I'm pumped...and will definitely be hoping that they aren't his last shows!

I'm honestly thinking about flying out east for some of those shows... I really, really, REALLY can't afford it, but if this is the last chance I have to see the Cardinals for a while, then I really want to go..... that's what credit cards are for, I guess!
