I'm a musician, but I haven't really finished a song in a few months... I'm just STUCK. It bites. I miss performing. I haven't really done any SK6ers songs yet. I should get on that.

I love your enthusiasm, PJ. :)

Maybe you can help me out. My friend got a new acoustic some time ago and gave me his old one to borrow and "learn to play." He taught himself, so I decided I wanted to do the same thing....I even bought the SK songbook in high hopes of teaching myself how to play a few. That was about 8 months ago....and about 7 months ago I taught myself 3 chords that I can't even remember now. Am I insane thinking I can teach myself guitar (I'm a pretty smart girl!). What book do I buy? Is any website helpful?

Jen, I taught myself to play a little over five years ago. I am in NO WAY an advanced guitarist. I know my majors, my minors, and I can play any song I really put my mind to. But in order to get farther than that, I'm definitely going to need some help. But to teach yourself the basics is a cinch. I started out by just buying a six-page book of basic chords, and the website CyberFret.com really helped me out a lot.

    DAYS!

Every time PJ and I get together to jam... everything always goes back to Days.

But, 4th of July is *so* fun to play. I need to get my capo back and we can jam some Milwaukee style.

And stop lying about the biting. Kassidy has told me the truth on that one...

"Days" is pretty much my favorite song right now. I should learn to play it.

haha...thanks guys i love it. All this posting i just can't take it! Yes days is definatly fun to play and im starting to feel the need to go out and buy a harmonica neck brace...haha or w/e its called just so i can jam out w/ that too while i'm playing the song. yea i've been wanting to buy the Sk Anthology for a while now but everytime i get near it at the merch table i'm short on cash. So i've been trying to figure most of it out now. And to all of you who think you can't teach yourself guitar for whatever excuse...you are absolutely wrong. I've playing for about a year and i can play a ton of songs. I've been teaching myself the whole way. Now i'm not great or anything. But i can get by and i love to do it. If you are dedicated to practice it everyday...and by practice i mean...sit down and play a guitar which in itself should be the best part of your day anyway. If your dedicated to it...it'll come to you easily. You don't need to know jack squat about music when there is guitar tab. So don't give some dumb excuse just because u feel intimidated by the thought of learning a new instrument. You can do it! I got my guitar on christmas and before the sun went down i was playing anthem. Yea i do have a little bit of musical talent that i got from my dad but still...guitar is so much fun and its something that you can take w/ you for the rest of your life. So definatly give it a try.

Keep posting guys this is great!

I see the light! I want a guitar. I'm so wrapped up in the violin that I always figured the guitar was for other people. I never even thought I could play it... where can I get one of these said guitars?!

Is it okay to post here, sk6fans nazi?

all you really need to get started is to learn 3 simple chords - G, D, and C. That gives you the verse to Days, as well as half of late 90s pop/rock. once you pick up F and Aminor, you can play a vast majority of any song you want. i first picked up a guitar 5 years ago and was shown G, D, and Cadd9 (very similar to G) so i could play "semi-charmed life" by 3eb. since then, all i've ever used has been google for chords, scales, and theory, and ultimate-guitar.com for tabs.

it's going to be frustrating for a while. you're really going to suck for about six months or so. your roommate will hate listening to you fumbling your way through half of weezer's blue album for 3 weeks straight. but trust me, it gets better, especially if you are a guy. any dude that plays guitar and swears to you that impressing girls doesn't account for at least 50% of his reasoning for playing guitar is a flat out liar. :)

suggestions - buy the silver korg tuner, it's the best low-price tuner there is. get a capo (put it on the 2nd fret and "wonderwall" by oasis is one of the easiest songs ever to play). learn how to change your own strings. once you learn more songs, you'll find out that there are generally 3 or 4 popular chord progressions, which, thanks to physics, will not change. long story short, all you need to teach yourself guitar is the internet and the will to stick with it.

in terms of playing SK6ERS songs, "sara & lisa" is fun, as is "anthem," "my sweet charade," and "thirteen".

Man I feel like there is a preacher on this forum.

PJ, y'ever consider dropping the comp engineer idea and becoming a public speaker?

Drew, that's great to hear. This morning I found my sister's guitar with kapo and korg tuner and all, and started trying to pick things. I know notes and all, but this whole chord thing is new to me. I started playing what might have been the Beatles' Girl, but only if you have quite the imagination.

How would I go about learning chords?

Hmm the public speaker thing...thanks but no thanks. haha. Yea lauren...YOU PLAY VIOLIN. Your fingers are more agile then mine are. You should pick it up no problem. E A D G B E live it, love it, learn it. If you know those 6 letters in that order. And if you know that the "E" on the left is equivalent to the "E" string on top then you can read tab! woooo! now put your fingers where the dots are and you are set. Starting chording away. yea my first day i learned Am, F, C, D and there you go. You have Anthem. So get amped for day two. And now that i think about it you prolly have atleast some callus's on ur fingers from violin so it should'nt hurt too bad as your starting out. Keep it up dog.

I know I'm not the first person to pick up a guitar and try to learn, but WHAT?!?! The first example of my horror and confusion... how can three fingers ALL go on the second fret for the A chord?! And, where are you supposed to even put your fingers? Depending on where your finger is between frets makes subtley different notes!

Anyone who wants to take up the violin... now that's where it's at. I'll gladly teach anyone. But I'm afraid this guitar business is coming to a close for me right...now.

In my eyes, the violin is much more intimidating than a guitar. *lol* A is probably the easiest chord there is, but at the same time, it is quite annoying. Just shimmy all of your fingers onto the fret.

nah, the violin's cake. you'll never have to squeeze several fingers into one square inch of space... that's nuts! hahaha if that's the easiest... oh man..

In between frets doesn't matter for the sound. Like, I could have a finger right behind the fret and it'll make the same sound as that same finger, same string, but an inch away from the fret.

Please PJ, don't call me God, it puts so much distance between us. You flatter me.

Now for round two of my pointless semi-rhetorical questions. What is a fret? And why aren't they equidistant?

because it isnt a violin. I was playing a violin at work the other day and all u have to do is move your finger and 8th of an inch and u get a completely different note ... the fret locks in the note in a way. and i put the "...god" because i knew u'd say something stupid like that. But obviously u did anyway. =/ so sad.

PJ was asking for help, he was calling ME god.

Anyway. Frets are bars of metal. They aren't equidistant because they are relevant to the length of the string from the bridge and the pitch that it makes when struck. They move up by half-steps.

frets are very close to equidistant - the ratio of one fret to the next is about 1.05 (the twelfth root of 2), with the 12th fret being the halfway point between the nut (that piece of wood at the top of the neck) and the bridge (that piece of wood just below the soundhole). go to wikipedia and look up 'frets', it's a good explanation.

in open tuning (no capo), you'll play most everything on the 1st and 2nd frets. there are other chords called barre chords that require you to essentially use your finger as a capo as you move up and down the neck of the guitar. these take a ton of finger strength - it took me an entire summer to get there, and that's playing every day.

some of the best technical guitar players i've jammed with started as violinists. you're on the right track. :)

I have been playing Milwaukee recently and have been using G-D-C for the verse and Em-D-C for the chorus which lets you segway into Days cause it basically the same. It sounds good to me but you don't get the high notes you can hear so i know its not right. I watched a couple videos of SK playing it and it looks like he capos the 5th fret? Anybody know what those chords progressions are?

Yup you are right, the capo is on the 5th fret. With the capo, the chords for the verse are D Asus G. The chords for the chorus are Bm A G, and the bridge includes G D/F# Em. The progression in bridge is different and also includes a Bm in the end but the order should be easy to pick up from the recording now that you know the chords. Hope that helps.

yea i play that one myself. Not a complicated song at all but its fun to play. I just learned fourth of july myself. Just from listening and seeing him live. I got front and center at the TLA show in philly last time they came around so i got to see how he played it there. It was funny i called every song just by seeing what tuning he was using and what chord (usually always the first chord of the song) he was playing to make sure he was tuned up. That was a great show.

Awesome, welcome to the board! Glad to see more people that like to play 6ERS songs, and glad to see you that you bought a CD and helped to support the band. Check out SK6ERS songbook at a show or in their online store, it has all the chords and lyrics for nearly every song!
